The most magical night of the year in Valencia is the night of 5 January. On Thursday 5th in the afternoon, the youngest members of the family will go to see the exciting Three Kings parade as it passes through the city’s main streets before reaching the Plaza del Ayuntamiento.
The arrival of the Their Royal Highnesses is always eagerly awaited by thousands of cheering children, who hold out their hands to wave at them and catch the sweets that are thrown out of the carriages as they go by.
Once the long-awaited parade is over, children return home and try to go to sleep before waking up on the 6th to the presents they have requested in their letters to the Three Kings.
This day would not be the same without the traditional Roscón de Reyes, a ring-shaped cake that is reminiscent of the traditional Valencian cake, pan quemao, and is decorated with candied fruit and filled with pumpkin jam, cream or chocolate. The cake also contains a couple of surprises: if you find your slice contains a figurine, you will be made King or Queen and be given a crown to wear, but if you find a bean, you will have to promise to buy the next year’s Roscón de Reyes.
